Fundraising Event for the Midland Cultural Centre is a Cuban Affair

MIDLAND, ON | Friday, September 19, 2014 - A new photographic exhibition of the UNESCO designated World Heritage city Havana, Cuba will be on display at the Midland Cultural Centre from September 26 until October 31.   Entitled Seven Nights in Havana, the exhibit is a collaboration of three local photographers and a joint presentation of Quest Art and the MCC.  Admission price for the evening is $15 with all proceeds from the exhibition donated to the Midland Cultural Centre.

The opening night kickoff is Friday, September 26 at 6:30 pm and it promises to be a lively and colourful, Cuban cultural experience. The evening will be opened by the Consul of the Republic of Cuba, Mrs. Susana Malmierca. Attendees will be delighted to hear and see live Cuban traditional music and dancers. Light fare with a Cuban flair will be served and representatives from Havana Club - Cuba’s most famous National Rum Company will offer sampling demos throughout the evening.

Contributing photographer and event organizer Ken Woods says that upon returning home from Havana two years ago he and fellow photographer Reinhart Weber realized that their images of the beautiful architecture and people of Cuba might be of interest to others. “The idea grew considerably, and now includes a third photographer, Rodrigo Moreno, who is new to Midland and has completed several professional shoots in Havana.”

An all-Cuban quartet will play classic traditional Cuban music - son montuno, guaracha, bolero, changüí and guajira from the 1930s to ‘60s in the MCC’s Atrium space. The band is led by popular bassist Roberto Riveron with Pabolsky Rosales on tres and vocals, Chendy Leon Sr. on percussion, and Jorge Maza on flute.

The evening also features performer and choreographer Dailyn Martinez Alfonso and her partner who will dance in Traditional and Afro Cuban style.  Dailyn was born in Cub and graduated from the National School of Dance in Havana, specializing in Cuban Cabaret and Traditional Afrocuban Styles. She has won several international salsa competitions including the Berlin Salsa Congress, and the Acapulco Salsa Congress.

If you find a special image you really like in the exhibition, it may be purchased to take home after the exhibition.

British Return to the King’s Wharf Theatre!

British Return to the King’s Wharf Theatre!
Tuesday, July 29th, 2014
PENETANGUISHENE– ‘Come on, come on’ to the King’s Wharf Theatre for a spectacular tribute to the music that rocked the world in Twist and Shout: The British Invasion. This energetic production celebrates the artists and songs that sparked a musical revolution, on stage four weeks only from August 7th to August 30th.
Conceived, written and directed by Drayton Entertainment’s Artistic Director, Alex Mustakas, Twist and Shout: The British Invasion is one of the most popular productions in the organization’s history. First staged in 2005 at the King’s Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene followed by a record breaking run at the Huron Country Playhouse in Grand Bend, the show was an instant hit. This revival, which also marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles coming to America, is poised to take summer audiences by storm.
In the early 1960s, groundbreaking British music began to drift across the ocean and invade North America, and the bands themselves soon followed. The Dave Clark Five was the first band to tour America and soon after four mop tops called The Beatles crossed the pond, forever changing the landscape of modern music.
The revolution that followed is expressed with glorious emotion in this fun-filled revue that features classic songs by The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, Dave Clark Five, Herman’s Hermits, and many, many more.
“The ‘60s was an exciting time of revolutionary music that had an enormous impact on me personally,” says creator Alex Mustakas. “I am really looking forward to sharing this vibrant revival with our summer patrons.”
Light-hearted comedy, groovy fashions, swinging dance numbers and the music that shaped a generation is brought together in this imaginative, infectious, and immensely irresistible piece of ‘60s nostalgia.
Over 60 show-stopping hits are performed by a first-rate ensemble of performers, including Alex Black, Lindsay Croxall, Gerrad Everard, Jennifer Kee, Duff MacDonald, Sarah Matton, Robert Markus, Laura Mae Nason, Nicholas Nesbitt, Yvan Pednault, Nick Settimi and Valerie Stanois.
Ted Simonett is the charismatic TV host and star of The Roy Solomon Show, around which the production is centered. Simonett takes theatre audiences back to a simpler time, reminiscent of the days when families gathered together around the television set to watch the hottest acts of the day perform on The Ed Sullivan Show.
“The set is fantastic,” says Mustakas. “We’ve acquired some authentic retro-style equipment in order to make the auditorium feel like a TV studio sound stage. It sets the right mood for audiences to relax, let loose, and have FUN!”
Working alongside Mustakas to mount this incredible show are Choreographer Gino Berti, Music Director Robert Foster, Lighting Designer Jeff Johnston Collins and Costume Designer Jessica Bray. The Original Set Designers for Twist and Shout: The British Invasion are Craig Guthrie and Richard Lawlor.
Twist and Shout: The British Invasion is proudly sponsored by John Sharp Images. Media Sponsors are Jewel 88.5 and The Mirror. The Design Sponsor is H.S. St. Amant & Sons Inc. The 2014 Media Season Sponsor is CTV.
Twist and Shout: The British Invasion will have theatregoers rockin’ in their seats eight shows a week, August 7th through August 30th. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.kingswharftheatre.com, in person at the King’s Wharf Theatre Box Office, or by calling (519) 549-5555 or toll free 1-855- DRAYTON (372-9866).

Barrie, Ontario. July 25, 2014: 104.1 The DOCK is proud to present Radio for Radiation Benefit
Concert VI, featuring legendary classic rock icon The Steve Miller Band, on November 19, 2014 at the
Casino Rama Entertainment Centre.

“We’re very excited to bring to Simcoe County our sixth and largest Radio for Radiation Benefit Concert,”
says Paul Larche, President of Larche Communications Inc. (LCI) and owner of 104.1 The DOCK and

“We could not do this without the generosity of Casino Rama” says Larche. “They are donating their
entire facility and Entertainment Centre amenities at no charge.”
The Steve Miller Band has sold more than 30 million records in a career spanning more than 40 years. In
its early years, the Steve Miller Band was a cornerstone of the burgeoning underground FM rock radio
stations that were springing up across the country. The Steve Miller Band's 1973 single "The Joker" was
an instant anthem, a breakthrough smash that shot all the way to No. 1. His 1978 album, "Greatest Hits
1974-78," became one of the best-selling releases of all-time, selling millions every year through the end
of the century. At the height of the classic rock movement, the Steve Miller Band was one of the defining
figures.

Hit songs, from 17 studio albums and three live albums, include "Rock 'n Me," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Jet
Airliner," "Jungle Love," "Swingtown," "The Joker" and "Abracadabra."
The benefit show will open with special guests “Sonic Coalition”, a local band made up of business
professionals who have helped raise over $500,000 for local charities. Sonic Coalition are Gerry Pilon,
Jim Fairhead. Chris Adams and Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman.
The Radio for Radiation Benefit Concert starts at 8pm on Wednesday, November 19 at the Casino Rama

of the century. At the height of the classic rock movement, the Steve Miller Band was one of the defining
figures.

Some people call him the Space Cowboy. Some call him the Gangster of Love. Whatever you call him,
Steve Miller is making the best music of his life. In 2010, 17 years after the release of Wide River, the
Steve Miller Band released Bingo!. The energetically rendered album was nominated as "Blues
Rock Album" of the year by the Blues Foundation. Let Your Hair Down was released in 2011. The album
shines with some of the finest guitar playing ever recorded by the Steve Miller Band.

ABOUT SONIC COALITION
Sonic Coalition brings their unique blend of turbo-charged country punk to festivals, clubs, and charity
gigs across the heartland of Ontario. Ranging from the Stones to Johnny Cash to Social Distortion, their

designs a lot of stuff all over the province and beyond.
Jim lives music - when he's not rocking out with the band his company makes the best luxury high end
musical amplifiers which are exported everywhere on the planet.
Chris Adams likes to find out what happens when you turn all knobs and settings to maximum. In
addition to guitars he is founder and Chief Technology Officer for tech superstar g-Shift Labs.

Drums and questionable backing vocals are provided by Jeff Lehman, when he's not busy being Mayor
of Barrie.

ABOUT RADIO FOR RADIATION

In mid-2011, KICX 106 and 104.1 The Dock reach their goal of raising over $500,000 for their Radio for
Radiology campaign, and the purchase of a new interventional radiology machine.
In November 2011, the stations pledged an additional $500,000, raising funds towards the purchase of a
CT simulator suite in the new Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre (SMRCC). The campaign is now
called “Radio for Radiation Campaign”
The addition of a new CT Simulator suite in the new SMRCC allows people in Orillia, Midland, Barrie and
all of Simcoe County to get treatment close to home, instead of the recent situation, which saw many
patients experiencing the additional cost, wait and disruption of going to Toronto for treatment. The reality
is that most of us, or a loved one, will have to deal with cancer in our lives. It’s a very stressful time. It’s
critical that residents in our region have the best, most convenient and timely care available. With help
from our many listeners and clients, the funding of a new CT Simulator suite for the new SMRCC will do
precisely that.
The CT simulator suite is the first step in the radiation therapy planning process and allows the cancer
team to “see” a patient’s internal structures like tissue, organs and bones. This visualization helps determine the specific positioning of patients during radiation.

King's Wharf Theatre gets ready to launch Canadian Comedy Thriller

Canadian Comedy Thriller at King’s Wharf Theatre
Tuesday, July 8th, 2014

PENETANGUISHENE – If you love a good ghost story, you don’t want to miss the thriller of the summer at the King’s Wharf Theatre. Laugh-out-loud funny and scream-out-loud scary, I’ll Be Back Before Midnight is a roller coaster play of emotions, on stage for three weeks beginning July 16th.
“I’ll Be Back Before Midnight is guaranteed to have audiences on the edge of their seats,” says Alex Mustakas, Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment.  “It’s a perfect mix of comedy and fright. There are plenty of laughs contrasted by stomach-dropping plot twists, special effects and tension that builds from the first line, and leaves the audience exhilarated.”
After a nervous breakdown, an emotionally fragile Jan and her archaeologist husband Greg rent an old farmhouse in the country near an archaeological dig where Greg can continue his studies and Jan can recover. But their dream of solitude in the country quickly becomes a nightmare when their new landlord (and neighbour), decides to divulge that a terrible murder once took place in the farmhouse and a vengeful ghost is reported to stalk the night.
The line between reality and imagination becomes blurred as Jan is tormented by strange sounds in the night and visions of the spirit. Is she having another breakdown? Is someone trying to drive her mad?  When she tries to defend herself from the apparition, events take an unexpected turn during a night of unimaginable suspense.
Bringing this gripping comedy to life is Director James Kall, who takes a seat in the director’s chair after performing with Drayton in the 2012 nail-biting mystery Sleuth at the St. Jacob’s Country Playhouse in Waterloo. A theatre veteran with an impressive list of credits, Kall draws on a wealth of experience to lead a dynamic cast in this spirited production.
Daniela Vlaskalic, who was last seen by Drayton audiences in the delightful comedy, How the Other Half Loves, takes on the role of the sweet but terribly tense Jan Sanderson. Making his Drayton Entertainment debut as Jan’s supportive husband, Greg Sanderson, is Andy Pogson. Elana Post creates further tension in this sharp-witted thriller as Greg’s manipulative sister, Laura Sanderson. Sandy Winsby is the seemingly well-intentioned neighbour, George Willowby who adds plenty of levity throughout this fast-paced play with his tall tales and raucous laugh.
Working alongside Kall to mount this spine-tingling show is an exceptional Creative Team that includes Set Designer Samantha Burson, Lighting Designer Steve Lucas, Costume Designer Jenine Kroeplin and Fight Director, Joe Bostick.
“This production is a great way to keep theatregoers engaged and entertained throughout the summer,” says Mustakas. “The intimate atmosphere of the King’s Wharf Theatre is the ideal setting for this original comedy thriller.”
I’ll Be Back Before Midnight has been described by The Globe & Mail as the most widely produced stage play in Canadian history.  It has been produced in 29 countries, 48 of the 50 states in the U.S. and every province in Canada.  It has broken numerous box office records including two record-breaking UK National Tours.  It was made into a Hollywood feature film starring Heather Locklear, Ned Beatty, Robert Carradine, and Susannah York.
I’ll Be Back Before Midnight is proudly sponsored by John and Terry Hamilton.  Media Sponsors are KICX 106FM and Orillia Today. Design Sponsor is Super 8 Hotels. The 2014 Media Season Sponsor is CTV.
I’ll Be Back Before Midnight will scare audiences silly from July 16th to August 2nd. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.kingswharftheatre.com, in person at the King’s Wharf Theatre Box Office, or by calling 705-549-0711 or toll free 1-855- DRAYTON (372-9866).

Aboriginal culture will come to life on the historic site with outstanding performances of drumming, singing and dancing.  The popular Neil Monague Hand Drumming Group will be featured in Sainte-Marie’s famous longhouse, and the riveting Aztec Drumming Group will wow crowds with their energetic and engaging presentations.  Also performing over the weekend are The Haudenosaunee Dancers, an Iroquois drum and dance group that uses water drums and cow horns to provide lively dance that thanks the Creator and reinforce community relationships.  Aboriginal performer John Samosi returns with his interactive hand-drumming, sure to delight visitors of all ages.

The Aboriginal Festival Weekend is on Saturday June 21 and Sunday June 22 at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. For further information call (705) 526-7838 or visit www.hhp.on.ca.

Peter Pan Opens Tonight at King's Wharf Theatre!

Second Star to the Right Shines Brightly on
King’s Wharf Theatre
Thursday, June 5th, 2014
PENETANGUISHENE – The 2014 Season at the King’s Wharf Theatre opens with the legendary adventures of Peter Pan. Theatregoers young and old are whisked away to Never Never Land in this traditional British panto that combines elements of fantasy, adventure, unforgettable characters, and plenty of comedy.  Peter Pan entertains now through June 21st.
Peter Pan is family entertainment at its best,” says Alex Mustakas, Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment. “The classic story is retold with an amazing cast of characters and sensational music that is sure to delight and have audiences rooting for the hero and booing the villain.  It’s a fun and interactive form of theatre that allows everyone to share in the magic.”
Based on the popular story by J.M. Barrie, this enchanting adaptation is written by Simon Aylin and Trudy Moffatt. The pair has wonderfully preserved the traditional tale and infused it with tons of energy and humor to create a classic British panto. Theatregoers of all ages can’t help being drawn into the hilarity!
In this beloved story about a boy who would not grow up, audiences embark on thrilling adventures soaring to the stars, swimming with mermaids, and battling swashbuckling pirates. You’ll meet your favourite characters including Peter, the Lost Boys, the Darling children, the villainous Captain Hook … and a few new eccentrics!
AJ Bridel is ideally suited for the role of Peter Pan. Her marvellous singing voice and playful demeanour are brilliantly showcased, even through flight and fight as she keeps everyone rooting for Peter Pan’s victory.
Thom Allison is terrific in the dual role of patriarch Mr. Darling and the evil Captain Hook. Allison captures the spirit of the infamous scoundrel, portraying Hook with the perfect balance of villainy and humour. Children especially take great joy in booing him, while laughing at his outlandish antics.
Melanie Phillipson delivers a warm and affectionate performance as Mrs. Darling while also tackling the role of Tiger Lily, the brave and beautiful Indian Princess, in which she delights.
Making their Drayton Entertainment debuts in this production are Eric LeClair as Michael, the littlest of the Darling children, and Nikki Ponte, who gives a cheerful portrayal of big sister Wendy Darling. Joining them as middle child John is Trek Buccino, delivering the perfect amount of maturity and cleverness.
A British panto wouldn’t be complete without a few surprises and Aidan deSalaiz is exceptionally funny as the outrageous character, Delilah the Cook.  His over-the-top costumes bring plenty of laughs, and are only surpassed by his sheer brilliant comedic timing.
Captain Hook’s dutiful sidekick, Smee, is played by Eric Da Costa. Engaging audiences with his lovable style and witty humour, Da Costa is delightfully entertaining as the sensitive underling.
Justine Clark, Rachel Clark, Jason Franco, Dani Jazzar, Grant Landry and Christine Watson round out an impressive ensemble cast.
Also appearing in this production are 35 local youth who are cast as the Lost Boys and dancers.
The Lost Boys are portrayed by William Alexander, Ian Beausoleil, Meghan Brown, Eleanor Guy, Owen Hinton, Andrew McLeod, Jason Moore, Ryan Moore, William Parry, Korol Pikulik, Liam Corrigan Ross.
Emily Adams, Hannah Billedeau, Hannah Black, Sophia Crawford Bald, Annie Corrigan Ross, Payge Dayler, Jory Harris, Claire Johnson,  Kira Keith, Tayla Keith, Alexandra Kuniewski, Elizabeth Laplante, Katie Laplante, Sydney Marion, Isabel Reader, Emma Reynolds, Kaija Robillard, Emma Robitaille,  Alyssa Salway, Tori St. Amant, Anastasia Stevens, Eden Stora Samantha Tate, Sarah Watt are the youth dancers who perform in rotating schedules throughout the run.
Director and Choreographer David Connolly demonstrates an obvious flare for pantomimes as he delivers a winning production. Credited with such past Drayton Entertainment hits as Disney’s High School Musical, Dance Legends, Miss Saigon, Crazy For You and, most recently, Legally Blonde: The Musical, Connolly has again succeeded in mounting a production that captivates audiences.
Music Director Michael Barber leads a phenomenal band through romantic ballads, clever comedic songs, and show-stopping production numbers in a musical score that is perfectly crafted to accompany this whimsical story. The Band features Barber on Keys I, Matt Lima on Bass Dave Thompson on Guitar, David Myers on Keys II and Craig Snowden on Percussion.
Jean-Claude Olivier has designed an extraordinary set that includes a fantastic rendition of the Jolly Roger pirate ship. His vision of the iconic moments in this classic tale will undoubtedly resonate with audiences. Lighting Designer Simon Day has created a visibly dreamy mood for the production with layers of complexity that are achieved through unique use of light. Costume Designer Angela Vanderveen has brilliantly captured the essence of each character. Her costumes are full of vibrant colors to make each character stand out beautifully. Fight Director Joe Bostick adds the final theatrical touches to this wonderful show.  The characters in this production soar through the air courtesy of the renowned aerial experts at ZFX Flying Effects.
“I couldn’t think of a better show to launch what promises to be an exceptional summer of entertainment on the shores of Georgian Bay,” says Mustakas. “Peter Pan is a high-flying fantasy that’s perfect for summer and offers plenty of family fun.”

Wye Marsh Chosen by Canadian Wildlife Federation as One of Canada's Greatest Hikes

May, 8 2014 – Midland, Ontario

Wye Marsh Chosen by Canadian Wildlife Federation as One of Canada's Greatest Hikes

One of Ontario’s best kept secrets might not be a secret much longer.  Wye Marsh, located just outside of Midland, Ontario was recently chosen by Canadian Wildlife (produced by the Canadian Wildlife Federation) as one Canada's greatest wildlife hikes.  The staff and volunteers of the Friends of Wye Marsh are thrilled for the recognition and honored that Wye Marsh is in such great company, with Algonquin Provincial Park and Point Pelee National Park to represent Ontario amongst the 18 hikes across Canada.  Wye Marsh is one of Ontario's largest intact wetlands and gives visitors great opportunities to see a variety of native wildlife species, from the magnificent trumpeter swans to river otters and painted turtles.  The Friends of Wye Marsh, a charitable organization have been stewards over the 3,000 acre wetland for 30 years and operate an education centre that provides visitors with the opportunities to explore and experience nature through guided walks and paddling tours, and interactive programs.   The Friends of Wye Marsh  are hoping that the article will encourage more people not only to visit Wye Marsh but to explore their local hiking trails as well.  As a charity Wye Marsh relies solely on the funds from admission fees and donations to continue to operate their facility and programs that promote and foster environmental stewardship.  Recognition like this is invaluable to us and we look forward to sharing our ‘gem’ with more wildlife enthusiasts this year.

The dynamic H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre will offer visitors a world-class facility that showcases the original 1815 hull of H.M.S. Tecumseth.  The original hull was pulled from Penetanguishene Bay in 1953 but has not had a climate controlled permanent home until now.

Exciting new exhibits surrounding the history of the Penetanguishene Naval Establishment will be part of the visitor experience in the H.M.S. Tecumseth plus a wide array of intriguing items including a powder flask, period coins, a brass platter stamped with the King’s mark, compasses, a carronade, a ship’s anchor, and even a rum bottle and flask.  Key historical personalities associated with the site’s history will also be explored, including Naval Hydrographer Henry Bayfield, Captain Samuel Roberts, and Chief Tecumseh.

The exhibit was funded in part by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, 1812 Commemoration Fund.

Jan Gray, General Manager of Huronia Historical Parks, notes that “the new H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre with its rare 1815 shipwreck is truly unique in Canada and will serve as a dynamic visitor showcase to the site’s 19th century story and its ties with the history of Penetanguishene, the region, and other sites throughout Ontario”.
